Planting at Gurrabeal

Planting of 133,000 Trees Nears Completion

Deliveries started early last week of the seedlings for our Gurrabeal Reforestation and Biodiversity Project, marking an exciting milestone in a long process to get trees in the ground.

Greenprint Nature contracted a nursery to grow 133,000 seedlings of 13 endemic species of trees and shrubs for the project at the end of 2024. To ensure the seedlings could survive the harsh conditions at Gurrabeal, seeds were collected from close to the site and propagated at a nursery with similar climactic conditions and at a similar altitude. In April our seedlings “hardened up” under their first frosts at the nursery and were ready for planting.

Over the last two weeks, a team of 12 has planted each of these seedlings by hand into the lines we cultivated late last year on 200 hectares of Gurrabeal. The property was divided up into zones using a range of features, including altitude, access to water, soil type and the presence of remnant vegetation, and species were selected for those exact conditions, with the goal of reestablishing the pre-clearing history of the landscape. We have also established monitoring plots to closely monitor growth trajectory and survival rates, which will inform future species mixes.
